Every year the Elkton Seventh-Day Adventist Church along with the Church's youth groups, the Explorer's and Adventurer's, go out into the community of Elkton and the surrounding area to collect food for the Elkton Area United Services (EAUS).
This process first starts with the preparation of the food bags themselves. Each paper bag receives a notification requesting assistance for the EAUS Food Pantry, as well as a drawing done by the children.
Once prepared, the bags are passed out one week in advance before pickup. The Church splits into groups that then go to each house throughout Elkton and the surrounding area to leave a bag asking for donations. The notice attached to the bag informs the recipient that the bags will be picked up the following weekend.
Much in the same way as they were passed out, the Church splits up and picks up the now filled bags. Any donations contributed are greatly appreciated and the EAUS certainly agrees, and we thank you to those who were able to donate during this event.
Once collected, all of the filled vehicles meet up at the EAUS drop off location for the Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is located at 218 W Spotswood Ave, Elkton, VA 22827. Then the fun part begins, organizing and shelving the product!
Through quite the coordinated effort, the Church and other EAUS volunteers begin to process, count, and stack the donated food provided by the community. With the help of Cheryl and Marty, the volunteer coordinator and another generous volunteer, we were able to organize the food efficiently and without problem. With the help of Church members, EAUS volunteer, and the Elkton community as a whole we were able to collect 2,674.5 lbs. of food this year!
Thank you to all of those who were involved in this undertaking, and we look forward to cooperating with everyone again next year for an even bigger contribution to EAUS!
